Our ongoing search for sensitive, object-focused solutions to insect pest infestation has led us to develop our low oxygen NOXIA technique, using inert gases, for the treatment of hypersensitive, extremely fragile or distressed works of art including oil on canvas paintings. By combining oxygen deprivation with the WARMAIR method, at less elevated temperatures (25-35oC), the duration of an inert gas treatment will shorten considerably.
With the NOXIA treatment the infested objects are enveloped in a specialized impermeable foil. After sealing the foil the resultant envelope is flooded with an inert gas. The gas displaces the oxygen and the insects slowly suffocate. By controlling the humidification of the gas in the envelope, it is possible to establish and maintain an atmosphere with a relative humidity (RH) that equates to the climatic conditions to which the object is normally exposed. As a consequence there is no possibility of damage resulting from moisture changes in the object
In addition the NOXIA process can be used at site, in conjunction with the mobile chamber, making the treatment very cost effective and circumventing many problems associated with transportation, security and insurance.
